The Team that had Nine Lives
TEAM LOOKS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF
EXTRA OPPORTUNITIES
By Jason Steinberg
Guy Harrison has been on teams that
have won plenty of state championships and shown up to
compete in the USTA League Tennis Southern Sectional
Championships over the years. However, with all the
success Harrison’s teams have had, none of them have
gone through quite the season that this year’s team has
endured.
On this year’s Senior Men’s 4.0
team from Greenwood, SC are family members, as well as a
group of players that all worked together for CSX
Railroads and became friends. They are all sharing a
crazy end to their season, and look to take advantage of
their opportunity.
After coming very close to making
it to Nationals a year ago, the team hit what seemed to
be a dead end a few times this season. In their group at
Districts Harrison’s team lost, but was awarded with a
wild card to keep playing. This sudden chance to
continue playing quickly became a trend for the team.
They made the most of the break
they were given and were able to advance to the finals,
only to lose a close match. Much to their surprise, the
winning team decided not to attend Sectionals, and to go
along with their new trend, Harrison’s team now has the
opportunity to compete once again.
“We sort of feel like a cat with
nine lives at this point,” exclaimed Harrison. While the
team feels very fortunate to be participating in Mobile,
they believe that they have a strong team that has a
chance to do well. “I think we have a good enough team.
This same team lost 2-1 in the finals last year.”
