Crusher … Dusty … Too Good … Lollipop
NICKNAMES ABOUND ON GEORGIA TEAM
By Emma Knight
When you watch the Georgia Women’s
4.0, you might think they have pretty unusual names.
Names like Crusher, Dusty, and Mighty Mouse. After
talking to these ladies from Atlanta and Athens, you
learn these are nicknames given to each member of the
team for a specific reason.

Sharon "Dusty" Doyle smacks a ball on the left and a
teammate in
search of a nickname plays on the right. |
Captain Sharon Doyle explained the
names. “Crusher was the first name that we gave out,
after my co-captain broke a teammate’s finger with an
overhead.” Doyle went on to say, “I was given the name
Dusty after an unfortunate incident on a clay court.”
The name Lollipop was given to one
of the team members after she couldn’t seem to help
herself from telling the opposing team the lineup. They
gave her a lollipop to keep her from talking, but when
that didn’t work they just stopped telling her the
lineup all together.
Doyle or should I say Dusty
described how Too Good got her name “Too Good played at
Georgia State. I told her if she would pick up a racquet
more than once a month, she would be really good. She
answered, “But then I would be too good to play with
ya’ll’.”
This spring was the first time the
team had played USTA together and we were the first (and
still the only) team to play out of The Georgia Club in
Athens. The team was formed by a group in Metro Atlanta
and some friends that lived in Athens. Now half of their
team is from Atlanta and the other half is from Athens.
With names like Dusty, Crusher, Flash, Bullet, Mean
Girl, Mighty Mouse, Lollipop, Glam Bear and Too Good
decorating their water bottles, this team stands out in
the crowd. Just look out for Crusher on the court.
