With ages that differ by 24 years, this senior men’s team from Louisville, KY definitely does not lack experience. The team, who call themselves “Bronsky’s Broncos,” formed over 15 years ago with players coming and going as time has passed.
While they have been greatly successful over the years, their most memorable win came at the 1997 National Championships. The team used its momentum from its victory at the sectional level to capture the National title. Team captain Vince Bronsky said, “If you can win at the Southern, the Nationals are a piece of cake. The Southern is really where all the action is; the best teams are down here.”
Bronksy believes that in order to be successful on the court, you must learn from your mistakes. He went so far as to hire a coach to come watch his team practice and point out what they were doing wrong and how to alleviate the problems. While the coach helped with the little things, Bronsky explained, “You have to have the raw talent; some people are just natural tennis players.” He seems to be a firm believer in the wise old saying “practice makes perfect.”
Although these Kentucky gentlemen spend a lot of time together on the court, they equally enjoy each others’ companionship off the court as well. Some might find it odd to attend a team party where the youngest person is 57 and the oldest, Bronsky, is 81, but not this group who are young at heart. “Bronsky’s Broncos” plan to head back to Louisville after the tournament and get together for a team cookout. According to Bronsky, “Tennis is a great socializing event. My best friends are the people I play tennis with.”
This team’s longevity is due in part to its togetherness, choosing the right players who play best together and practicing. Hopefully this team can battle it out once again and create another memorable trip to the National Championships. Bronsky’s spirits are high and concluded our interview with a prominent “GO BRONCOS” to sum it all up.
