A Story Of Sportsmanship

CAPTAIN tells how winning overhead becomes lost point

Bob Knight, third player from right, showed great
sportsmanship.

In our fourth match at the state tournament, we were playing the only other undefeated team in our flight, the Nerren team from Starkville. We had already lost one singles court and were down the first set in two other matches.

Jeff Dickey and Bob Knight were in one of those doubles matches. Already being down one set, the score was 3-3 in the second set. Dickey and Knight were on serve and Bob Knight was playing at the net. He received a lofted shot to him at the net to win the game and he put it away to win the point.

Everyone started to walk to the benches and thought the game was over. Bob Knight stopped everyone and stated he hit the net on the put away overhead and the point needed to be replayed. Not only was it a close match that could have decided us going to the finals but nobody else heard or saw Bob hit the net. This was a display of sportsmanship at it's finest and as a captain I could have not been prouder.
