The women’s 2.5 team from Atlanta began playing tennis together in August of 2010. Never in their wildest dreams did they think that less than one year later they would be competing here in Mobile for a chance to go play at the USTA National Championships.

In their first USTA league season, the team went 5-1 in the regular season after playing tennis for less than a year. Here at the USTA League Southern Section Championships, they are 2-1 and are jostling for the top spot in their group.

Despite their immediate success, their first year playing has not come without challenges. After forming their team last year, they were comprised of players representing 10 different countries. Playing in Mobile were players from Israel, Korea, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland.

All of the different personalities and differences make for a very interesting time on the court, with each player bringing their unique background to the team dynamics. Yet, tennis has proven to be a universal language on their team. They have formed close relationships both on and off the court and have an immense amount of respect for each other.

The challenges of diversity were not the only thing facing the group of women. The entire team is comprised of young mothers with kids running from 2 to 10 years old. Throughout the season they had to face the challenges of finding childcare for their matches. This week in Mobile, they expressed the nerves of leaving the children under the father’s supervision while they were away.

Regardless of the nerves of their husband’s supervision, they are enjoying their weekend together. Throughout the past year learning to play tennis together, they have become incredibly close. They love being able to spend time together and when asked if what their most memorable experiences throughout the last year together were they said “Unfortunately, none that are appropriate for the website.”

As they compete to advance to Nationals, the team has grown even closer and they have cherished the time they have been able to spend together this week.
